An event devoted to the rights of persons with disabilities

EHR P.A hosted a roundtable discussion devoted to the alternative report on the monitoring of implementation of the UN Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities. The representatives of civil society and experts in this field participated in the event.
The abovementioned report was prepared jointly by Education on Human Rights PA and the coalition of more than ten organizations dealing with disabled people within the UNICEF and OHCHR project.
The main objective of the report was monitoring and evaluation of exercise of their rights and freedoms by the disabled persons as well as analysis of compliance of domestic laws with the Convention. The project aimed to inform the Committee about the identified gaps and contradictions in the legislation and direct the appropriate recommendations to the government for the better implementation of the Convention.
In her speech, chairwoman of EHR PA Irada Javadova touched the problems faced in the disabled persons' everyday life and the gaps in the relevant legislation as well as the Law of the Azerbaijan Republic On prevention disablement and limited health capacity, rehabilitation and social security of disabled persons and children with limited health.
The participants discussed the ways to solve the problems, stressed the need to strengthen joint efforts for addressing the identified shortcomings in this area. In the end of the event, experts presented their recommendations for improving of the legislation regarding to people with disabilities. The discussions are planned be continued in late February with the members of parliament and public agencies
